Road Trip Gas Cost
Enter the distance, your car's gas mileage and the price at the pump: instantly see what the trip costs in total and per passenger, tolls included.
How to calculate the gas cost of a road trip
The math is simple: miles รท MPG = gallons needed, and gallons ร price per gallon = your fuel bill. You'll find your car's real-world gas mileage on the trip computer or the EPA label: a typical sedan gets 30โ35 MPG on the highway, an SUV or pickup 20โ25, and a hybrid can top 45โ55. Keep in mind that steady highway cruising burns less fuel than stop-and-go city driving, while a full load, air conditioning or a roof box can raise consumption by 10โ20%. Add tolls if your route uses a turnpike or toll bridges, and check the round-trip box to double both distance and tolls.
Splitting the cost between passengers
If you're carpooling, the "people in the car" field divides the total into equal shares โ perfect for road trips, commutes and shared rides. Remember that gas and tolls are only the out-of-pocket costs of the trip: the true cost per mile of owning a car (tires, wear, insurance, depreciation) is considerably higher, as AAA's annual driving-cost studies show. Treat the result as a fair estimate of the direct expenses โ exactly what you need to split the cost evenly with your passengers. This tool provides estimates only.
