Split the Bill

Dinner's over and the check just landed: enter the total and the number of people, add a tip or reduced shares if you like (kids, the birthday guest) and everyone knows exactly what they owe.

Split evenly or with adjusted shares?

Splitting the check evenly — total divided by the number of diners — is the fastest way to wrap up the night without going through the bill line by line, and it works well when everyone ordered roughly the same amount. But when there are kids at the table, someone who only had an appetizer, or a guest of honor who traditionally doesn't pay, a reduced share keeps things fair: set how much they pay compared to everyone else (50% for the kids, 0% for the birthday guest) and the tool recalculates both shares so the sum matches the bill to the cent.

Tipping and rounding in the US

In the United States, tipping at sit-down restaurants is expected: 15–20% of the pre-tax total is the norm, with 18–20% common for good service. Enter the percentage and the tool adds it to the total before splitting. It also shows each share rounded up to the nearest 50 cents — handy when people are paying cash — and tells you how much extra that leaves, which usually just goes toward the tip. For itemized checks or separate payments, ask your server: this tool is simply a quick, no-fuss way to do the math.
