Where the sepia effect comes from

The name comes from the ink of the cuttlefish (sepia), used since the 1800s to tone photographic prints: the treatment replaced the silver with more stable compounds and left the warm, golden-brown cast we now associate with old photographs. Toning wasn't just about looks โ€” it genuinely extended the life of the prints. This tool reproduces that same tone with the classic sepia matrix applied pixel by pixel to the red, green, and blue channels.

Which intensity to choose

At 100% you get the full "archival photo" look, perfect for costume portraits, retro-style weddings, or vintage posters. Between 60% and 80% the tone stays warm but keeps a hint of the original colors โ€” the most natural choice for social media feeds. Below 40% the effect becomes a gentle warm cast, handy for warming up a photo that feels too cold without making it look antique. Move the slider and compare: the preview updates instantly, and the downloaded file keeps the original resolution.
