Tone Generator

Generate a test tone from 20 to 20,000 Hz, pick the waveform and the volume: perfect for testing speakers, headphones, and your hearing across frequencies.

⚠️ Watch the volume: always start at the minimum and raise it a little at a time, especially with headphones. Pure tones at high volume can be unpleasant.

How to test speakers and headphones with a tone

Human hearing covers roughly 20 to 20,000 Hz, but the upper limit drops with age: above 15,000 Hz many adults hear nothing at all, and that's perfectly normal. To try out a subwoofer, start around 30–40 Hz with a sine wave; to check whether a speaker rattles or distorts, sweep the slider up slowly and listen for any buzzing. A 1,000 Hz tone is the classic reference for comparing the volume of the left and right channels.

The waveforms in a nutshell

A sine wave is a pure tone with no harmonics — ideal for testing. A square wave adds the odd harmonics and sounds "electronic," like old video games. A sawtooth contains every harmonic and is the foundation of the most aggressive synth sounds, while a triangle sits in between — soft and flute-like. At the same volume setting, square and sawtooth waves sound much louder than a sine: one more reason to keep the volume low.
