How to play hangman

The computer picks a word from the category you selected and shows it as a row of blanks, one per letter. You guess one letter at a time by clicking the on-screen keyboard (or pressing a key on your physical keyboard): if the letter is in the word it appears in the right spot; if not, you lose a life and one more piece of the drawing is added. You get 6 lives โ€” head, body, two arms, and two legs. Guess the whole word before the figure is complete and you win the round.

A trick to win more often

In English, the most common letters are E, T, A, O, I, and N, followed by consonants like S, R, H, L, and D โ€” starting with these almost always uncovers a good chunk of the word. Then think about the category and typical English patterns: common endings such as -ING, -ER, and -TION, double letters (LL, SS, EE, OO), and pairs like TH, CH, and SH. With a little practice, 6 lives are almost always enough.
