Why designers use placeholder text
When you're designing a website, a flyer or an app, the final copy usually doesn't exist yet. Lorem Ipsum fills the gaps with realistic-looking but meaningless words, so whoever reviews the layout actually judges the layout — columns, margins, type size — instead of getting distracted reading the content. It has been the standard for designers, developers and typesetters for decades, and it's also handy for stress-testing the character limits of a template or CMS before anything goes live.
Where Lorem Ipsum comes from
It isn't made-up gibberish Latin: it comes from Cicero's "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (45 BC), a treatise on philosophy. The original passage contained the words "dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet"; a 16th-century printer scrambled and truncated them to build a type specimen sheet, and the text has been part of the printing toolbox ever since, all the way into modern desktop publishing software. This generator uses that same classic vocabulary, recombined into sentences of varying length.
