Why Memory is a genuine brain workout

Matching pairs puts your visuospatial working memory to work: your brain has to link each symbol to its spot on the grid and hold that information for tens of seconds while new cards keep appearing. It's the same mental machinery you use to remember where you parked or which drawer holds an important document. Playing regularly and gradually stepping up the difficulty (from 4×4 to 6×6, which has more than twice the cards) is an enjoyable way to keep it sharp at any age.

Strategies to finish in fewer moves

The most effective approach is to explore methodically: in your opening moves, keep revealing brand-new cards instead of revisiting ones you've already seen, so every turn adds information. Memorize positions by zone ("the rocket is in the top-right corner"), and the moment you flip a card whose twin you already know, close the pair right away. The theoretical minimum number of moves equals the number of pairs, but that's nearly impossible in practice: anything under 14 moves on a 4×4 grid already makes you a strong player.
