How to measure your foot at home
Place a sheet of paper against a wall and stand on it with your heel touching the wall. Mark the tip of your longest toe (usually the big toe) with a pencil, then use a ruler or tape measure to measure from the edge of the paper to the mark. Repeat with the other foot and go with the larger number โ almost everyone has one foot slightly longer than the other. Measure at the end of the day, when your feet are a little more swollen, and wear the kind of socks you plan to use with those shoes.
Why sizes vary between brands
US, UK and EU charts are reference standards, but every manufacturer builds shoes on slightly different lasts: a US 9 running shoe can fit like a US 8.5 dress shoe. That's why the actual foot length โ in inches or centimeters โ is the most reliable number to shop by: many brands list it on the product page as the insole length. For kids' shoes, add roughly a quarter inch (about half a centimeter) of growing room. When you're between two sizes, size up.
