Steps to miles & kilometers

How far did today's steps take you? This tool estimates your stride length from your height (or uses one you've measured yourself) and calculates the distance in miles and kilometers, plus approximate calories burned.

How steps are converted into distance

The math is simple: distance = steps × stride length. The average stride can be estimated from height — about 41.5% for men and 41.3% for women (at 5 ft 8 in, that's roughly 28 inches per step). The famous 10,000 steps therefore work out to about 4–5 miles (6–8 km) depending on how tall you are. For better accuracy, measure your real stride: walk 10 normal steps, measure the total distance in inches, divide by 10, and enter it in the dedicated field — a measured stride always takes priority over the estimate.

How reliable are the calories and time?

Calories are calculated with an average coefficient for walking at a normal pace — roughly 0.53 kcal per kilogram of body weight per kilometer, or about 0.39 kcal per pound per mile. Your actual burn depends on speed, incline, terrain, and metabolism, so treat the number as a ballpark figure. The time shown assumes an average walking pace of about 3.1 mph (5 km/h). All values are rough estimates — useful for tracking your progress, but not a substitute for a GPS watch or heart-rate monitor. This tool provides estimates only and is not medical advice.
